Are we the only ones with an ever-growing to-do list? We cross one thing off to add two more. One of the things that has been looming on our list: Find a Cable Alternative!!. We were throwing away SO much money each month for a cable service that was expensive, never working correctly and honestly hardly ever watched between Netflix and Hulu. Guess what? We found a solution! Say hello to YouTube TV!
Let me back up a little bit. We were using EPB for our cable and internet. We have four TVs in our home and we paid on average $260 a month. Insane. I cringed paying the bill each month. Especially because we would sometimes go weeks without even watching our cable. Our OnDemand never seemed to work correctly, leaving us to catch up on our shows on Hulu and we often binged shows on Netflix. One thing that kept us from cutting the cord all together were RJ’s sports channels. I saw someone talking about YouTube TV on their Instagram stories, but honestly never really see any ads for it and it kept slipping my mind. One day with none of my Bravo shows recorded and not on the EPB OnDemand (all though they aired multiple days before), I decided enough was enough and googled ‘YouTube TV’.
There was a free two-week trial, so there was nothing to lose! I signed up and decided to see how much we would miss cable if we didn’t have it as an option for those two weeks. Well, long story short we did not turn on our cable one time during the two weeks. We never missed anything and I was able to watch so many of my shows that weren’t available via OnDemand/cable. We cancelled our cable, saving us $150 on our bill each month! We still use EPB for WiFi and a home phone (don’t ask) but will be saving over $1200 each year.
I shared this decision of ours on my Instagram stories and I didn’t think anyone would even care, ha! Boy, was I wrong. I was flooded with so many questions and similar frustrations of their cable. I decided it would be easiest to round up all your questions here and tell you more about why we love YouTube TV.
Q: What is YouTube TV?
A: Well, it’s basically an independent tv service that requires no sign-up fees, contracts or long term commitments. It’s month-to-month and works on your TV, SmartPhone and Tablets. It has Live TV, OnDemand, and unlimited recording space.
Q: What channels do you get?
A: Well there are over 70 local and national channels on YouTube TV. If you go to their website, you can input your zip code and it will give you a full list of all the channels available in your area. It had all the channels we watch but the best way to make sure you won’t be losing your favorite show is by checking out their site. I also encourage the two week trial! We got a lot of questions about Live Sports – YouTube TV offers all the channels such as ABC & CBS + multiple ESPNs and Fox Sports. RJ was happy with these options and my Grandpa watch multiple golf tournaments over the weekend and never missed a beat! We also haven’t had any buffering issues at all.
Q: How does it work?
A: So there are essential three different screens. The first screen is your ‘Home’ screen. This is where you’ll find episodes you were watching yet haven’t finished, suggested shows and networks based on watch history, popular YouTube video clips, movies, etc. The second screen is your ‘Library’. When you setup your YouTube TV, you can choose your favorite shows to record. There is no limit on how many shows/episodes you can record so don’t be shy! I filled our queue up with both RJ and I’s favorite shows. Not only can you come here to watch all recorded episodes, but you can catch up on older episodes and seasons. One girl messaged me that she selected it to record all episodes of Friends since it’s no longer on Netflix and she can still binge her favorite show! The third screen is where you’ll find ‘Live TV’. This is essentially just like any other cable subscription where you will find all your channels and what is currently playing on them. It looks just like the EPB/Comcast TV Guide screen and you can scroll through to see what you want to watch.
I was EXTREMELY pleased with how user friendly YouTube TV is to navigate. I love how quickly I can find any show or network, having the option to watch all the way back to season 1 of many old shows and that we can still watch Live TV if we want to.
Q: How much is it? Do you have to pay per TV?
A: This was another aspect that I was very pleasantly surprised with. It is $50 a month and that gives you the ability to share with 6 family members (all creating their own accounts) and can be simoultaniously used on 3 TVs. We will never be watching more than two TVs at once, so I invited my mom to create an account as well. With our one login, we can access our account on any TV in our house + my iPhone and iPad.
Q: Do you need special equipment?
A: You do need either a smart TV or a roku/Amazon Fire/Apple TV. Basically, if you have the ability to watch Netflix on your TV, I am 99% sure you can download the YouTube TV app. Also, note that the YouTube TV app is different from just the YouTube app. One of our TVs is a smart TV, so we downloaded it straight to our TV. For the other three, we use an Amazon Firebox and it’s great! We also use it for Netflix.
Q: Do you still have Netflix and/or Hulu?
A: Yes and no. We use my parents Netflix and Hulu so we technically aren’t cancelling it but we haven’t used Hulu once since getting YouTube TV. Netflix, we will continue to use only because we like some of the Netflix specific shows and movies. While we can technically still hop on our hulu account, I don’t think we will have a need to. So if you are paying for that and cable, that’s another thing you can cancel to save money!
Q: Why YouTube TV and not Hulu Live?
A: We have Hulu like I mentioned above but I’m not a huge fan. I think the interface is a little confusing. I also looked into the Hulu Live but I could NOT figure out if you got Bravo or not. I’ve heard you do but I never got a definite answer and I can’t live without my Bravo shows. So really, just a personal choice. I did get a couple messages of girls who recently switched from Hulu Live to YouTube TV and like it better!
I got a ton of similar questions on my stories/DMs so hopefully I covered all of them! If I missed one or a new one popped up, let me know below or DM me. I hope this was helpful. It is NOT sponsored at all, I’m not receiving anything if you sign up, I just really am so happy we switched and wanted to share. Working from home + being pregnant, TV is something I do a lot of. I feel like a pretty great resource for your TV needs, haha! I’ll also share some videos of YouTube TV on my Instagram stories (@RileySitton). XO
