Last week I shared a few videos of our front porch and one of my most common DMs was ‘How do you keep your porch so clean?!’. First, thank you! I’m happy you guys think it’s clean because it’s definitely not always that way but one trick I have figured out is how to waterproof fabric for outdoors and this is a huge help in keeping your space looking fresh!

This little trick is so easy, I almost feel silly devoting a whole post to it but I did want somewhere easy for you guys to reference! All you need is some pillows or fabric you want to use on your porch and this Scotchgard Water Shield Spray. We actually didn’t use the heavy duty spray, but our porch is covered so I recommend the heavy duty if you feel you get more of the elements.
Once you have everything you need (we used two cans for our daybed and swing), you’re ready to waterproof fabric! Start with clean pillows, blankets or sheets -whatever you want to waterproof! Lay it all out and do a clean layer of spray on the top side. Let it dry, flip and repeat. We did about 4 coats on each item. We repeat this process every 1-2 months, but sometimes forget and so far everything is ok! For our sheet on our daybed, I put it on the mattress and then sprayed it.
When we did a little Spring refresh, I washed all our sheets/pillows/blankets but haven’t resprayed yet. I’ll be sure to do so on IG stories so you can see! It’s truly so simple though and makes SUCH a difference. We have two large white pillows that weren’t meant for the outdoors but have lasted over a year now.
I was having trouble finding outdoor pillows I loved, so this really was the perfect solution! Our pillows are mainly from Home Goods or H&M. A good trick for making your pillows really look their best? Size up once in the insert. For example, our 20×20 covers hold a 24×24 inch pillow! I’ll show you more of this on my Instagram stories (@RileySitton).
