Building the Perfect Salad + My Top 5 Favorite Mixes

March 13, 2017

/ dinnerfooduncategorized

Spring has sprung! Well, almost but with the time change this weekend it definitely is right around the corner. Nothing screams Spring like a bright, colorful, crunchy salad. Today I’m sharing my blueprint for the perfect salad + a few of my favorite mixes.

Not only do I love salads this time of year, but they are also a huge part of trying to be my healthiest for Summer. I try to eat as many salads as possible since it’s the perfect non-carb base for your meal. My personal favorite base is arugula. Not only does it hold up so well in the fridge (store it with a dry paper towel in the container to soak up moisture) but it’s my favorite taste! The only time I stray from my favorite arugula, is if I’m creating a mexican salad and then I reach for romaine!

Since eating salads day after day can tend to get tedious and boring, I decided I would share a few that I rotate out! The best part is I can keep a plethora of dry ingredients for weeks and rotate in and out produce depending on what I’m craving that week! First, I made a little cheat sheet of some of the best mixable, matchable salad toppings.

I’m going to share the toppings I use for each salad, feel free to choose whatever base you think fits best! I like to make a huge batch of chicken at the beginning of the week and use that as my protein, it’s easy and delicious! Also, I’m not a huge fan of dressing so I usually just use lemon juice, salsa or no dressing but I figured most people wouldn’t like that so I’m sharing what dressing I think fits best.  And lastly, I hate onions so I will never included them in any salads but feel free to add them if you like!

E V E R Y T H I N G

Dried Cranberries

Hummus

Dressing: Raspberry Vinaigrette

If you’re taking a salad on the go and you want your chicken (or beans to be hot), pack all the toppings in a container and then carry the lettuce in a separate baggie. Keeping the dressing separate will also help from it becoming soggy! I hope this handy little salad guide will give you some new Spring recipes! What is your favorite salad? I would love to hear what you think if you try any of these!
