Ground Turkey Sloppy Joe Sweet Potatoes

Monday, August 28, 2017

I try to find recipes that are nearly impossible.. like I want them to be healthy, I want them to be easy, they need to be delicious and they can't be too healthy that hubby won't eat it. And preferably, I want it to make a lot of food that we can eat as leftovers but also be cheap. See impossible.

But when I do find a recipe that fits all the criteria, boy is it a winner! We will keep it on repeat for months! This past summer we kept these Sweet Potato Sloppy Joes on repeat and they are perfect for your Fall cook book!

RJ is a huge sloppy joe fan, but I thought I didn't care for them. When he requested them over and over, I finally decided to cave! Of course, I had to create a healthy version. Since I usually don't eat them, making this I was so nervous I wouldn't be able to get the flavors right. RJ seemed to love it though and one day I was reheating it at work when someone asked "who's eating sloppy joes?!". So I think I've finally nailed it down and it's time to share it with you guys. I'm thinking a post soon will be how I create my own recipes.

I guess technically you could eat it on buns, but the sweet potato is so good y'all. I've started to think the perfect recipe is a mix of savory + spicy + sweet & this hits the nail on the head. You can turn up (or down) the spice as needed to make it perfect for you!!

Even though this makes a lot, it's not expensive so it's perfect for family dinner, repack for lunch or next time you have some friends over! Think of it as a fun twist on chili night.

Ground Turkey Sloppy Joe Sweet Potatoes

I N G R E D I E N T S
1 Package of Ground Turkey
1 Can of Kidney Beans (Drained)
1 Can of Navy Beans (Drained)
2 Cans of Tomato Paste
1/2 Cup of Water
1/4 Cup of Worcestershire Sauce
1 tsp. Minced Garlic
1 1/2 tsp. Cumin
1 1/2 tsp. Chili Powder
1/2 tsp. Onion Powder
1 tsp. Paprika
1 tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar
6 Sweet Potatoes

D I R E C T I O N S
1. In a large skillet on medium heat, brown ground turkey until no pink remains
2. Reduce to low and mix all ingredients together
3. Stir and simmer for 20 minutes
4. While simmering, poke holes in sweet potatoes and cook in microwave
5. Serve Sloppy Joe mixture in Sweet Potatoes & Enjoy

This mixture is also so good over plantain chips for a healthy version of nachos! If you're doing Whole 30 you can leave out the beans and it will be approved.

This is one of those dinners at our house where you eat and eat because it's so good and you end up so full you can't move! You have to let me know if you try it or make any modifications! I bet it would be good with some sautéed onions or peppers, we just don't like either! xo

How to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh (Even with Two Furry Dogs!)

Recently someone asked me if the shedding was worth having a golden retriever. If you've been reading here, know me or have ever seen my five million dog posts.. you already know it was an immediate '1,000% YES'.

The only time we've ever had any sort of "problem" with the pups is when we had our house for sale and the realtor commented that our home smelled "doggy". (We soon found out this was due to their dog food being stored in an open container near the front door, but more on that below)

Anyway, I soon became an expert on a fresh, not fake smelling home. Here's a few of my favorite tricks:

- First, when we heard our home was 'doggy' we spent a full day cleaning, like hard core cleaning. We were so disappointed to hear the smell was still there. We soon realized that we stored the pups' food right next to the front door, in an open container. When you walked in you got a huge wiff of dog food. Be sure you're storing all food and treats in a sealed container. It made a HUGE difference.

- On the topic of cleaning, we also started using a Febreeze Air Purifier. It's small, I keep it plugged in under the bar cart and you can't see it! It does make a slight humming noise, but after a day you won't notice it. Not only does it purify the air but it also releases scents. It's nothing over powering just enough to refresh the air. It takes refillable cartridges that you can find at Walmart or Target. I also like this because we leaving it running 24/7 unlike candles or other things you won't feel comfortable leaving going while not at home.

-When we are home we obviously love candles, but Anthropologie is my go-to for candles. Even though they're pricier, they work SO well. Most candles you can smell when you walk in the room even if they aren't lit. This is my all time favorite candle from them.

-I recently received this Stick Diffuser as a gift and it's my new obsession, I'm definitely going to be buying more so I can place them in more rooms. I was skeptical on how well it would work but it's amazing. We keep ours in our bedroom (which can become 'doggiest' first since the dogs sleep in there) and this keeps the whole bedroom smelling fresh.

-In addition to the candles and diffusers, we love love love a wax melter! You can purchase scents so many different places, including Walmart. I'm so excited for all the Fall ones, we just bought a Pumpkin Pie Wax from a shop on the Mountain this weekend.

-Another thing to remember is that fabrics can trap smells so easily. I like to use a fabric spray like Febreeze or Method Lavender Lilac Spray (from Target) on all fabric furniture, pillows, rugs, etc. I try to wash all blankets every other week and our sheets once a week. I recently purchased this detergent and the smell is heaven. A little goes a long way so if you try it be sure not to over use it in your load!

-We also like to spray the dogs down with this essential oil doggy spray. It keeps them smelling fresh in between baths!

-Finally, when you vacuum be sure to clean your vacuum out-- replace filters, wash filters and removable parts, etc. If not you will just be recycling and spreading the dog smell around!

I wouldn't trade these crazy fur balls for the world! So having to stock up on extra smell goods is so worth it. I love Fall because I love the warm, sweet scents that come along with it! SO many great options like Oatmeal Cookies candles, cinnamon pumpkin wax melts, and Fall baking filling up the kitchen- omg it's making me so excited!

I will have so many Fall recipes coming to you soon, we're finally getting settled & our couch is supposed to arrive today. If you ever have any post requests, let me know! I hope you week is great, I can't believe this weekend is Labor Day weekend. xo

Hello #HomeSweetSitton

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

I am SO excited to share this post with you guys. Moving is.. well awful honestly. I am so happy it's over but I'm so, so, SOOO happy that we moved so it all was worth it in the end!

Last time I left off with our moving update, we had just made an offer on a home and today you finally get to meet it! It was so nerve wracking.

We fell in love with this house the moment I found it online. In fact we only looked at it one time before we bought it. We loved the neighborhood, we loved the lot, we loved the house and it felt so perfect. I thought for sure it was too good to be true. I've never felt more anxious about something in my life. So, we looked at it and prepared to make an offer but we were informed that there was someone else also making an offer. The builders had until 5 pm on a Friday to get back to us with a decision and they finally called around 4:45 to tell us ours had been accepted. I'm about to cry again just typing it, it did not feel real.

This was our first time buying a home and it was hard looking at houses. We have actually been looking on and off for about two years, but this is the first time we actually felt serious about moving. There was one other time we made an offer on a house and looking back it's so obvious that God was playing a huge role in finding the perfect home for us.

Our neighborhood is a dream. It's filled with so many families and kids, we love it. Every night everyone is out playing, walking around and the dogs are in heaven y'all. Dallas will literally cry if we don't let him go outside to see the kids. Luckily, I think all the kids like him too or his little heart (and mine!) would be broken. Doodle is afraid of the kids which is so funny. She's finally warming up enough to where they can pet her if we're by her too. RJ and I joke that when we finally decide to have kids, we will be surrounded by so many babysitters!

There were actually three houses in our neighborhood that we looked at. At first, I was very torn between two homes. One was ours and one was across the street. RJ was definitely more in love with ours but I really liked the other house too. Basically what made our final decisions were a few things.. in my opinion our house is classic, timeless and the perfect base. Not that it's a fixer upper by any means but it's the perfect amount of character that we can add our own touches and truly make it our home vs. the other home we looked at was more trendy. I like projects and I felt like the other house would be almost boring, not enough to do. The second factor was the lot. The other home backed up to a semi busy street, where our house overlooks an 80 acre farm! We get so much more privacy + a gorgeous view.

Our little home is starting to take shape but there is still a ton left to do. We are (not so) patiently waiting on our new couch that is 6 weeks late. We did finally get our blinds last night and I'm so excited with how they look!! We're trying to work room by room until we get everything finished but I cannot wait to share the journey with you guys!! I'm so excited to be sharing this post with you today! I still have plans to venture into YouTube and one of the main videos I want to share is different hair tutorials. I've learned that so many of my friends cannot do their hair at all! Which makes me happy because I love doing people's hair and I'm always happy to help + I figured if most of my friends can't curl their hair, then maybe my readers can't either and it would be fun tutorials!

Anyway, today I wanted to share some exciting news, a new project, a huge giveaway and hairy 4-1-1 on my hair!
First! How adorable is this space? I've been working with one of my best friend's Julie to help her open her dream salon and it's been amazing. When she approached me about opening her own salon, I was 100% supportive of her, being a girl with my own crazy dream (ehm, blogging) I am always thrilled to be a part of others chasing their passions.

I've been working since about mid July, to help Julie prep Juliet's, build the social channels and launch the digital marketing. It's been crazy, but what is my life if not insane! The craziest part was Juliet's opened on August 1st, the same day we were closing on our house.

My friendship with Julie is proof that everything happens for a reason. About three-ish years ago, I went to a different stylist who turned my hair orange. Like Ronald McDonald orange. I had a major freak out and was given Julie's number. She squeezed me in the next morning before the salon was even open and not only fixed my color, but my hair actually looked healthier than ever.

We continued to become closer over the years and this past year we really became best friends. Not only are we best friends but we work well together too. She is an extremely hard worker and pours all of her energy and passion into every project. It's an absolute joy to be on this adventure with her!

I wanted to take this time to discuss all things hair. I told y'all about this post on IG stories and received so many great questions! I'm so excited to answer them and then talk about some fun things happening around the salon!

Your hair is so long! How do you get it to grow and stay healthy?
It's fake! Julie specializes in Natural Beaded Row Extensions (also known as, NBR) an extremely popular and less damaging version of microbead extensions. Julie trained in LA to receive certification to install the NBR and she has me HOOKED on them. Y'all they're amazing.
Rj laughs at us and says I'll be 80 calling Julie to put my weave in and he's probably not lying. It takes about an hour or so to put them in and they last about 6-8 weeks before you need to move them up. You buy the hair from Julie, I have had both 9 pieces in but currently I only have 5 pieces in. The hair lasts about 7 months before needing to be replaced! It sounds #DivaLife, but it's actually pretty low maintenance. The only thing I would suggest is investing in a nice blow dryer, they can take longer to blow dry!
Besides that its wash, dry, style as normal.

**Extension care isn't anything crazy! You can use a deep conditioning mask as needed and swim with them in, too! If you do swim, Julie recommends braiding your hair instead of doing a ponytail or bun until you wash it. I also sleep with it in a low ponytail. I use a wet brush to remove any tangles.

How do you keep up with light hair and a busy schedule?
I complete understand this question! Blonde hair is hard work. There is so much up keep that comes along with blond locks. You run the risk of damaging your hair, it takes lots of appointments and you have to worry about the upkeep of the color (not turning brassy). Being a girl is hard!
To keep cost down and not have monthly salon visits, Julie does foilayage with a deep smudge root. The smudge root helps growth look natural, aka less salon visits! I can go 3+ months in between visits if I use a little secret that is a game changer..

Ok, so Julie has tried to get me to use purple shampoo for years. She told me it combats brassyness and refreshes your blonde. I swear y'all my hair has never looked better and it's extending my color life longer than ever.
Lather your hair up with purple shampoo and let it sit for about 10 minutes before washing, only use it once a week though! You'll think me later.

One of my favorite other hair secrets is such a steal! I'm such a sucker for these $10ish curling irons. My hair holds a curl pretty well and I think these do the trick. I mainly love that you can order different sizes and experiment with what you like before splurging on a nicer curling iron.

Check out Juliet's Website for more info, pricing and to receive 10% your next service!! (Plus, you can check out what I've been working on for her!!)

Ok, these are my major hair tips for you. I will be back so soon with tutorials, including my classic curls, boho curls, fun braids and more. BUT! There's more good news..

Juliet's is celebrating their Grand Opening this Friday August 25th and you're invited!! Come talk hair, Fall fashion, blogging, digital media, food, whatever you want honestly! I love to chit chat. We will have light bites, drinks, photos, giveaways and more.
Plus, we have a huge, huge giveaway launching Today. We've teamed up with Luxe Boutique for a grand prize giveaway featuring a special prize basket and gift card from Luxe, 50% off a hair service + other local faves for runner up prizes.
